Understanding Tuberculosis: Types, Symptoms & Treatments
From the desk of Dr. Ashwin Yadav, Agra's Premier Pulmonologist
Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant health concern in our community. As your dedicated lung specialist, I want to share important information about this disease:
Types of Tuberculosis:
1. Pulmonary TB: Affects the lungs, the most common and contagious form 2. Extrapulmonary TB: Occurs outside the lungs, affecting organs like lymph nodes, bones, kidneys, brain, or spine 3. Latent TB: Bacteria present but inactive, causing no symptoms and not contagious 4. Active TB: Bacteria actively multiplying, causing symptoms and potentially contagious
Key Symptoms to Watch For:
- Persistent cough (lasting more than 3 weeks)
- Coughing up blood or sputum
- Chest pain while breathing or coughing
- Unexplained weight loss
- Fatigue and weakness
- Fever and night sweats
- Loss of appetite
Treatment Approaches:
Most TB cases are completely curable with proper treatment. Standard therapy involves: - 6-9 month course of antibiotics (combinations including isoniazid, rifampin, ethambutol) - Regular follow-up appointments to monitor progress - Completing the FULL course of medication, even after feeling better
Prevention:
- BCG vaccination for children
- Early diagnosis and treatment
- Good ventilation in living/working spaces
- Screening for high-risk individuals
Don't ignore persistent respiratory symptoms!
